Sunday, July 19: Vine Practice Session Invitation
Bull and Moon by Toni Demuro

Greetings,

Our upcoming Sunday group practice session will be offered from 10:00 to 11:15am Central Time. Following a brief period of zazen, Shujo, the head seat, will offer a talk on manas, or ego-consciousness. Tenshin Anderson Roshi addresses this topic in his commentary, The Third Turning of the Wheel, "The Idea of Self," pp. 65-68.

You are invited to attend this practice session. See the protocols and Zoom link below.

This talk is part of a series on Yogacara or Mind-Only teachings. In one of the classical commentaries by Woncheuk, the question comes up, "What is the Buddha's purpose in teaching Mind-Only?"

Here's the answer:

"The sutras state that there is only consciousness in order to lead one to observe consciousness and abandon external objects. Once external objects are abandoned, the deluded mind ceases. When the deluded mind ceases, one realizes and accords with the Middle Way.

"Thus, a sutra says: 'Not realizing that objects are only mind, one gives rise to the two kinds of discrimination. Having realized that objects are only mind, discrimination also does not arise. Knowing all dharmas are only mind, one abandons the characteristics of external objects. By this, discrimination ceases, and one awakens to the equal, true emptiness.'"
